The 19th Hellenic Conference of Academic Libraries is organized by the Library and Information Service of the Panteion University in Athens from 3rd till 5th of November 2010. The theme of the annual conference is "Scientific communities and libraries in a world of social networking and synergies".
Academic libraries find themselves into a complicated social-technological environment characterized by social networking; online communities of users that exploit emerging technological solutions. In particular, the rapid growth of web 2.0 innovative technologies that facilitate interactive information sharing and interoperability, allowing users to interact with each other as contributors to the website’s content, has transformed the way information is accessed and used and has also shaped a new model of sharing information resources among communities.
There is strong interest among Greek academic libraries in highlighting and taking full advantage of the Greek scientific production which urges them to redefine their standpoint, to assign new roles and to develop new services for their users. Academic libraries aim to enhance their social impact with the help of new technological innovations.
However, Greek academic libraries encounter a critical phase of expenses abridgement and personnel reduction making the need for synergies and collaboration among them imperative in order to further develop their services
